The Economics in the Public Sector course provides students with an overview of the U.S. economy, the major categories of public expenditures, and the main methods used to finance these expenditures.
Economics in the Public Sector introduces the role of government in national and sub-national economies, privatization, inter-governmental fiscal relationships, economic analysis techniques such as cost/benefit analysis, and social and political considerations in public economic and fiscal activity.
Through the MPA Public Management course students will cover the principles of tax analysis and cost-benefit analysis. Students will also gain a greater understand of public sector economics by focusing on the role of public policy in improving economic efficiency, promoting the goals of equity and social justice and improving equity by altering the distribution of wealth and income.
The Global Issues in Public Administration Master's degree course is designed to cover topics of contemporary and controversial nature, focusing on globalization and international aspects of government.
Through this course students will gain an understanding of the implications global social and economic variations have on the effective practice of public service leadership in an increasingly global environment
The course is geared towards enhancing students understanding of the different ways public administration, public service management and leadership evolve for different global issues, cultures and nations of the world.
Students will be provided with a broad overview and background of global issues in public administration to understand the dynamics of a society in transition, and examine the challenges of public administration in highly diverse societies that comprises people of widely different racial, ethnic, religious and socio-economic backgrounds.
The ultimate goal of the Global Issues course is to understand the fundamental ways that various cultures, principles and practices vary in communities around the globe, as well as how these global societies impact government practices and citizens. This increased understanding of international and global issues will better equip students to serve as public administrators in the US and around the global.
The Leadership, Power, and Influence course examines the theory and practice of leadership in organizations. The course will provide students with the cognitive skills need to understand power and influence dynamics as well as how to learn to use them as effective tools to analyzing surroundings and achieve goals.
Traditional and modern theories of leadership will be explored, as well as the practical application of these theories in the work place. In addition to covering the traditional concepts of leadership in organizations, this MPA course will take an in-depth look at the power and influence a leader has over the organization and its members.
Students will explore how leaders effectively use power and influence to achieve organizational commitment and goals. The course provides students with the opportunity to observe effective and ineffective uses of power in different organizational contexts and career stages. It will also introduce difficult ethical questions associated with the use of power and influence.
This course will introduce students to the basic concepts of ethics. Students will examine ethical frameworks as they relate to busi- ness, the environment, the consumer, and the individual with an organization. Students will learn to apply these frameworks using moral decision-making techniques to real world case studies. The class will offer students practical tools to help them recognize and address challenging ethical decisions.
