Frequently Asked Questions about Online Courses at Marist

What is an online course like?

Online courses have many features similar to traditional classroom-based classes, such as lecture notes, discussions, assignments, and exams. The system also offers a range of tools designed to facilitate interactions with project materials, instructors, and peers.

How will I know what to expect?

Approximately two weeks prior to the start of the course, students will receive a welcome kit via email containing information about books and orientation. Students new to online learning at Marist will be required to attend the online orientation to introduce them to the virtual environment and how to navigate the online course.

How do I access the course?

The course is delivered through iLearn, our online collaborative learning environment. Students use their Marist account and password to access the contents of the course 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

What are the minimum web browser and system requirements to access iLearn?

Take a look at our Browser Requirements.

Do I have to be online at a specific time?

Generally, classes do not meet at any particular time. Flexibility is one of the great benefits of taking an online course. Instructors may set up group chats or post online "office hours" at a particular time. Usually, the instructor will ask for the availability of those in the class and will schedule group chats to reflect the availability. Instructors will usually post due dates for assignments at the beginning of the course.

How much time will I have to devote to an online course?

Marist's online courses are equivalent to a traditional semester-length Marist course, even if they are offered in an accelerated winter four-week or fall/spring/summer 8-week course format. Students spend approximately three to four hours per week on the Internet and roughly eight to 12 hours per week on homework (e.g., reading, research and completing assignments).

How do I order my books?

Students can order their books online by visiting the Marist Bookstore website at Marist Bookstore and searching for their class by course number. The books will then be shipped to the address specified. Local students can also visit the Marist Bookstore at the main campus in Poughkeepsie.

How do I get in touch with my instructor?

Communication is highly valued and strongly encouraged in online courses. Instructors are accessible via email and during weekly office hours and online discussion forums. In addition, instructors will also provide their phone numbers and other contact information.
