Curriculum

The Curriculum and Schedule

Students can complete the program in 2 years in a full-time, accelerated plan or through a more flexible and less time-intensive 3 year schedule. The sequence is subject to change.

The curriculum includes knowledge about the counseling profession and ethics, evaluation and assessment, counseling theory and skills training with an emphasis in multicultural perspectives, research methodologies in counseling, and 700 hours of experience in the practice of mental health counseling under the supervision of licensed professionals. To ensure the highest level of training, experiential activities using role playing, recording of mock counseling sessions, and group and family therapy sessions simulations will be required. Full-time students starting in the Fall semester usually complete the program in two years. Full-time students take four courses during the Fall and Spring semesters, and two courses during two Summer semesters. During the first year, classes meet in the daytime and evening. During the semesters that students are training at field placements, courses are scheduled in the evening to allow flexibility in scheduling their clinical work hours.

The curriculum is designed to meet the academic standards required by the New York State Education Department for the profession of mental health counseling and as such contains offerings that include the following:

  • As many as six counseling courses
  • Multicultural perspectives
  • Research methodologies
  • Professional orientation and ethics
  • Externships (600 hours) with licensed professionals
